"In ParaNorman, you had the character Mitch very non-chalantly mention his boyfriend right at the end. In The Boxtrolls, there’s a sort of villainous drag queen, Madame Frou-Frou. Do you think that might be seen as a more negative portrayal of LGBT characters?”

"Not at all. If anything, the character of Snatcher is more accepted in drag than he is as he wants to be, which is a wannabe aristocrat. He has talents, skills and a magnetism when he’s being his true self that he lacks when he tries to be something that he’s not. The Madame Frou-Frou character is adapted from Alan’s book and took on a slightly different form in the film. It was a way for Snatcher to spread his anti-Boxtroll propaganda in a way but oddly, in this pseudo-Victorian society, he ended up more accepted in that form."

-Laika CEO Travis Knight

Be warned though that there’s controversy regarding a Boxtrolls character who I can’t decide whether or not is transmisogynistic.

(potential spoilers to follow)

I really want to support Laika after the game changing steps they’ve made for the queer community in Paranorman and in the Boxtrolls gay families advertisements, but they have a character who is… I donno, a man disguised as a woman? It’s the main villain, and he first appears dressed as a woman in a drag performance, but it later becomes clear that every one in town thinks this evil dude is for reals a woman. They make comments about her and try to dance with her and it’s a little on the harassment side? The comedic relief is that the guy is gross and ugly and you know it’s him instead of the woman. Note that the character is NOT actually transgender.

So if you’re particularly triggered by transmisogyny or things of the like, be careful in deciding to watch Boxtrolls. I want Laika to be able to survive in the entertainment industry, but I don’t want them to be this insensitive. And honestly I didn’t notice the transmysogyny until after I saw the movie and thought about it for a while, and then read other people’s opinions on here.

Can we try not to tell children that dressing as a different gender is funny and weird? Boxtrolls had a good message but there was also that unfortunate message and ehhhh they really didn’t have to do that… kind of disappointing. I expected a more forward thinking approach, like Paranorman. (Also were there any non-white humans? No one important that’s for sure.)

Hi guys. we need to have a serious chat right now.

Two years ago, there was a movie called Paranorman.

image

It didn’t do so good at the box office, despite it being one of the most important, game changing animated movies since the Disney renaissance. It made its money back, but it wasn’t the smash hit Frozen was.

And this is a fucking tragedy.

Why?

People read into Frozen that Elsa was an allegory for many things, one of them being LGBT. That’s cute. Meanwhile, Paranorman had the first ever openly, proudly gay character in an animated movie. ever. There was no allegory, there was no “well if you squint”. HE WAS GAY. HE HAD A BOYFRIEND. And Tumblr didn’t make this movie a smash success. There wasn’t a million mash ups with this and Return of the Guardians and HTTYD and Brave or whatever. There wasn’t long posts reading into Agatha Penderghast and how they handled bullying. This movie had a smallish following and fell off the map.

Now, Laika has a new movie coming out.

People are scared for Dreamworks right now. The news that if HTTYD 2 doesn’t do well, they’re going to lay off a bunch of animators is terrible. Don’t get me wrong. But Laika is a small company doing fantastic things. Everyone loved Coraline. Great, where was your money when it counted? Coraline didn’t do fantastic either. This is a SMALL STUDIO. THEY NEED ALL THE HELP YOU CAN GIVE THEM. All the money you threw at Frozen, a far inferior film, could’ve gone to a movie that mattered.

(just putting it out there, I liked Frozen. But Paranorman was not even in the same ballpark of quality).

what i’m trying to say is, Laika needs to be protected at all costs. It isn’t wrong to love the big three of Disney/Dreamworks/Pixar, but small companies deserve a chance to grow just as big. there is room in the industry for new and beautiful things, and Laika is SO going to be the frontrunner for this. Their movies are, so far, dark and challenging, beautiful and haunting, and innovative. Give them a reason and a means to make more movies.

Go see the Boxtrolls. Good, bad, mediocre, Laika deserves it.

No but the best part of this is that this isn’t Nintendo telling adults they support GSM rights.

It’s Nintendo telling kids it’s okay.

i’ve seen more posts of people being excited for Home than this movie, which made me upset because this movie comes out before Home does (not that i am saying that you shouldn’t praise Home as well). and as for Big Hero 6 (a movie that also comes out after the Book of Life) and the people saying that there is a lack of representation of Asians in media, i feel you. why? because there is a bigger lack of hispanics, and i agree Disney messed up, you be upset. but be happy for Hispanics as well because we finally got an animated movie representing us and our culture. so please go see this movie when it comes out.

that is all i ask.

im soexcited about this movie but i keep seeing this post and want to add that everyone should also keep in mind that dia de los muertos is specifically MEXICAN. la muerte (santa muerte) and a lot of what is being depicted is seen primarily in MEXICAN culture and should not be lumped together in its entirety as a “hispanic” thing.

I need to explain a little bit more about the cast, because seriously this is so cool:

The cast of characters in the movie is almost entirely Mexican, save for a few minor characters who (from what I can tell) aren’t relevant to the plot. The voice cast is ALL POC with like 3 exceptions, and most of the cast members are Mexican, meaning that this is a story being told by characters and by people who have a direct cultural connection to it. That’s huge.

ALL OF THIS AND MORE! GO SEE IT!

Hispanics need so much more representation then we get <3

Yayy culturesss <333

My only fear is cultural appropriation bs from hottopic or something but SEE THIS MOVIE

The Whitest Kids U’ Know x

I really spent four years in the states thinking this couldn’t possibly be a real thing but then I graduated and everyone knew the pledge of allegiance PERFECTLY and then I realized how true this gifset really is. If you say something enough as a kid, it’ll never leave you. The thing tho, is that normally, kids know lullabies, and songs. Not a poem about mindless patriotism.

REBLOGGING FOR ALL THE FUCKING TIMES I GOT IN TROUBLE, MAINLY IN HIGH SCHOOL, FOR NOT SAYING THE WEAK ASS PLEDGE!

SAME! I used to “baaaaaaa” during the pledge in middle school lol

in high school one of my teachers told me that if i didnt say the pledge, i had to write him an essay to explain why. The next day i dropped 5 pages of fuck you on his desk in mla format and i never had to say the pledge in that class again
